Kg. Mesilou is a Kadazan-Dusun village located close to Mount Kinabalu near Kundasang in Sabah. It is the gate-way to the well-known Mesilau Nature Resort (MNR), Desa Dairy Farm and Mount Kinabalu Golf Club (MKGC). It can be reached by any type of transport in about one and a half hours from Kota Kinabalu and in less then 15 minutes drive from Kundasang.

Mesilou is derived from the Dusun words “osilou” which means yellow, because the rivers that cross the village are yellow naturally colored. Atamis means cold, because of the cool climate of the village. It lies at an altitude of about 1800m above sea level and located very close to Mount Kinabalu. The temperatures can be as low as 15°C during the night. Of the natural resources here, especially the rivers are well maintained. There are many other activities making the village ideal for nature recreation with the friendliness of the local people here.

Furthermore, 98% of the local community is Dusun Islamic and two families are Dusun Christian, living together harmoniously. Most of the people here are farmers, some are mountain guides and a minority is working in the government sector and in private agencies.

Through the villagers’ involvement in the state’s homestay program, tourists can enjoy a comfortable and truly hospitable experience here. So far there are 12 registered participants involved in managing the homestays, comprising in total 23 rooms to be rented. More than 15 participants will join the program in the near future.
So far they have hosted travelers from England, Holland, USA, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. During their stay tourists can enjoy Bamboo Traditional Music. They will have meals together with the family; go to the rivers and enjoy their traditional way of catching fish by using worm, cotton cord, bamboo stick and pail only.

Our homestay programme is a unique chance for tourists getting to know the Sabahan people especially the Kadazan-Dusun (hill people) and learn about their culture and lifestyle in a safe, comfortable and friendly environment. The peaceful and quiet setting of Kampung Mesilou is ideal for those who want to experience life in the close proximity Mount Kinabalu; making the village the “highest homestay village in Malaysia”.
